Although three days may not be enough time to jet set to a tropical vacation spot, this weekend doesn’t have to be consumed by Call of Duty and Netflix marathons. All within a two hour drive, these day trip destinations can transform the Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend into something to be reminisced about for years to come. 


Perfect North Slopes

Perfect North is a prominent commercial winter sports attraction in southeast Indiana. After purchasing a lift pass, visitors have access to slopes for skiing, tubing and snowboarding. Experienced snow-goers can bring their own equipment, while first timers can rent equipment and receive a 50-minute complimentary lesson with the purchase of a lift ticket.

The Artist Within

For those who like souvenirs, The Artist Within in Muncie offers visitors the opportunity to decorate their own pottery. The ceramics shop produces many of the pieces up for sale or decoration. The Artist Within also offers year-round classes and has a party room to accommodate larger groups.

Sun King Brewery 

As the first full-scale production brewery in Indianapolis since 1948, Sun King Brewery offers a selection of original house, seasonal, and specialty beers. Sun King offers tours and tastings. Tasting room visitors are given four tickets and two tokens. Tickets are redeemable for 3 ounce sample pours of Sun King’s house beers, while tokens are used for equal portions of seasonal or specialty beers.

Caribbean Cove Indoor Water Park

Sprawling over 50,000 square feet, Caribbean Cove offers an inclusive vacation destination for people looking for a splash in the winter months. The park features three 40-foot tall slides, multiple pools, an interactive play scape and much more. On-site lodging is available, with more than 340 rooms for rent. 


General Admission: $15 per person for a day pass to the water park. Winter special is 2 admissions for $20 on Sundays

Sky Zone

The Plainfield attraction offers an active experience: trampoline rooms. With floors and angled trampoline walls, Sky Zone features open jump and also gives visitors access to courts to play games such as dodgeball. “SkyRobics” fitness classes are also an option for groups.

Science Central

Located in Fort Wayne, Science Central is an interactive, hands on, science facility that proclaims to be “great for kids of all ages.” Regular demonstrations are given by the staff, which sometimes include liquid nitrogen and explosives. Visitors can also visit the “Moon Gravity Simulator,” which allows visitors to experience what it would be like to walk and jump on the moon.

The Indianapolis art district offers a wide range of attractions including galleries, bars and coffee shops. Residing in a renovated bank robbed by John Dillinger, The Art Bank serves as a gallery and work space for local artists to promote and sell their work. A short walk away, patrons can sip drinks and eat sushi in the polished chrome and blue neon of Forty Five Degrees, dine on authentic German food and beer at The Rathskeller, or visit any of the district’s many shops, coffee houses, book stores or bars.

Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory 

The more naturally inclined may be interested in the Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory in Fort Wayne. The conservatory hosts four outdoor gardens as well as indoor and seasonal displays. Most prominent is the tropical display, where orchids, palms, ferns and other plans surround a cascading waterfall. The desert garden displays more than 75 different types of cactus.

Fort Wayne Komets Hockey

Fort Wayne’s minor league Hockey team, the Komets, face off against the Toledo Walleyes on Friday. Making their home in the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, the Komets invite hockey fans looking for a little winter weather action.
