In a presentation to administrators, faculty and student leaders, Vice President of Student Affairs Kay Bales will present the elimination of smoking areas on campus.
Ball State eliminated campus-wide smoking in March 2008 and the university has labeled itself smoke-free, although smoking sections dot the campus.
The new plan, titled “Smoke Free Ball State,” calls for the elimination of all remaining smoking areas and for Ball State to “become a tobacco-free campus.”
Under the current policy, anyone who smokes outside of designated sections can be fined up to $50.
Bales presented the plan to the University Senate last week. The plan cites other colleges, such as Indiana University, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and Ivy Tech as campuses that have already implemented a similar policy.
According to the presentation, 825 campuses nationwide are “Smoke Free.”
The plan also cites the university’s strategic goal of promoting healthy lifestyle choices.
