3 nabbed, 1 sought after NW Indiana mall gunshot

HOBART, Ind. (AP) — Police said three youths have been arrested and a fourth was being sought after a gunshot led to the evacuation of a shopping mall in northwestern Indiana.

The Times of Munster reported the bullet from a Russian-made 7.65 mm handgun lodged in a ceiling and did not strike anyone Saturday at the Westfield Southlake mall in Hobart, six miles southeast of Gary.

Hobart Police Chief Jeff White said off-duty officers working security at the mall swiftly apprehended three boys ages 14, 15 and 16.

He said the boys who have been arrested were the aggressors in a fight with another group of boys.

Witnesses said the shooting sparked a chaotic scene as people fled from the area of the shooting. Authorities evacuated the mall at 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
