Homecoming committee creates off-campus housing contest

For the first time, students can decorate their houses as part of the Homecoming activities, contributing to this year's theme - "Play your cards right."

Houses eligible to participate include ones on New York Street to Wheeling Avenue, from Wayne Street to Bethel Avenue and Riverside Avenue.

The idea evolved with the Homecoming Steering Committee because some people felt the Village always decorates for Homecoming, but no other part of the university usually participates.

"When the alumni come through the Village, it looks very festive and like they're ready for Homecoming, but if you drive through the neighborhoods or go down Riverside and look at the fraternity houses, you wouldn't even be able to tell it was Homecoming. We really want to make it known all over campus that it's Homecoming, not just in the Village," said Kelly Smith, community and sponsorship chairwoman.

All houses and decorations need to be ready by 4 p.m. Sunday. Students are required to keep all decorations less than $100. Smith and the Homecoming Steering Committee do not want participants to spend a lot of money and instead use decorations that participants already own.

Some students are even getting involved in the decorating contest that live outside of the marked areas. Smith said she's had students contact her asking if they are able to decorate their houses. She encouraged them, but said they will not be able to be judged or win any prizes.

Awards will be given for the best decoration - one in each location and one overall winner from all the locations.

Smith said she hopes this contest continues into the future. She said the positive feedback she's received from people about the contest lead her to think this will be something that will grow and not just be a one-time thing.

"I think it would be neat for me to come back as an alumna in 10 years or so and see everyone on campus participating, so hopefully it will grow," Smith said.
