FOOTBALL: Northern Illinois holds early 7-3 lead after first quarter

Lynch's 29-yard run puts Huskies in lead

Score: Ball State 3, Northern Illinois 7

After forcing a punt on Northern Illinois' first drive of the game, Ball State's offense started at its own 4-yard line. The Cardinals were able to drive into Huskie' territory before another fumble on its first possession.

Last week, a handoff exchange was fumbled on Ball State's opening drive. This week, running back Jahwan Edwards fumbled, and Northern Illinois recovered at its own 31-yard line.

But Northern Illinois couldn't take advantage of the takeaway as Ball State's defense forced a three-and-out to get the ball back.

On the first play of the next drive, Ball State appeared to have a long touchdown pass from Keith Wenning to Willie Snead for 67-yards, but a holding penalty wiped out the touchdown. Ball State couldn't recover from the penalty and were forced to punt for the first time in the game.

Northern Illinois took the first lead of the game after quarterback Jordan Lynch scored from a 29-yard run. The run came on fourth and two and gave the Huskies a 7-0 lead with just over four minutes left in the first quarter.

Wenning found freshman wide receiver KeVonn Mabon on the following drive for a 44-yard pass that put Ball State at the Northern Illinois 3-yard line. Following three straight run plays, Ball State was forced to settle for a 20-yard field goal that was converted right before the end of the quarter.
