FOOTBALL: Ball State holding onto slim lead

Wenning finds Snead for 12 yard touchdown pass

Score: Ball State 23, Northern Illinois 21

Ball State started the third quarter by quickly driving deep into Northern Illinois territory and eventually would end up at the goal line.

Unlike last week, quarterback Keith Wenning found the endzone on a sneak play to extend Ball State's lead to 23-14. At the time of the touchdown, Ball State had scored 20 consecutive points.

On its next offensive series, Wenning threw his second interception and was picked off by linebacker Michael Santacaterina. The turnover sparked the Northern Illinois offense as it quickly moved down the field and scored a touchdown. The Huskies' Jordan Lynch scored his second touchdown of the game to cut the lead to 23-21.

Ball State moved the ball just inside Northern Illinois territory on its next drive but was forced to punt for the second time in the game.

But the Cardinals' defense came up big again as it forced the Huskies into another punt situation after failing to pick up a third and 10 play.

Wenning came up with a big pass to wide receiver Jamill Smith for 16 yards on third and 15 to get the ball to the Northern Illinois 28. The drive led to a missed 34-yard field goal try from kicker Steven Schott.
