Dinner to help students go green

Two weeks into a campus wide competition, organizers are offering more events for students.

The goal of the challenge is for students to save the most energy by learning to use it in a more resourceful way.

Ball State Dining and Ball State Energy Action Team are hosting the “Dinner in the Dark” event for the second year.

“Environmental sustainability is part of Ball State’s values statement, and dining is always looking for ways to increase sustainability on campus,” Suzanne Clem, marketing coordinator of Dining Services, said. “Partnering with B.E.A.T. is one of the ways we do that.”

Ball State Dining will have dinners from 5 to 8 p.m. at Noyer Centre in Noyer Complex and from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at America’s Buffet in LaFollette Complex.

Students will dine in the dark, having activities including giveaways, free glow bracelets and Halloween candy.

Costumes are welcome at the event.

Elizabeth Poore, assistant director of operations in Dining Services, said they are expecting 400 students in each dining facility.

“Having this event will make students more aware about saving energy by turning off lights and making sure to not leave items plugged in while in their dorms,” said Spencer Barnes, administration assistant at Knotts/Edwards in LaFollette.

Clem said the amount of energy they will save with the lights off during the meal will help students spread awareness about the energy challenge.

“The goal of university dining is to support the initiative that B.E.A.T is trying to do in raising awareness for students to learn about reducing energy,” said Polly Ems, general manger of Noyer Dining.

Clem said many of the staff will dress up in costumes and there will be Halloween decorations and activities.
