With model penises, condom races and bingo, safe sex education is the topic of conversation during the "Safety in the Heat of the Moment" event this evening.
The annual event, which used to be called Safe Sex Bingo, still includes bingo along with condom races, movie quote lines and a best pick-up line contest.
"We have model penises," said Shannon Morris, president of the Ball State Student Action Team. "We teach people how to put [condoms] on correctly and take them off correctly. We do like relay races, and it's a lot of fun."
The first person in line puts it on, the second takes it off and so on until the original person is up and they take the condom back off for the win.
The bingo has sexually transmitted diseases and sexually transmitted infections as terms on the board to raise awareness.
Morris said the most interesting part of the night is the pick-up line contest.
"We bring up people from the crowd to give us their best pick-up line," she said. "They came up with so many good ones last year and so many I've never heard before."
The evening is meant to be a fun and educational experience for students.
"Some students don't know that much, and what they do know, they learned from high school health class," Katelyn Calhoun, public relations for SAT, said. "Some people don't feel comfortable asking questions, but we make it fun and educational, the two best things an event can be."
Last year, the event drew about 300 people, and the organization is hoping to draw a similar crowd this time.
"With the name change, we aren't quite sure if everyone really understands it's the same event," Morris said. "We wanted to make sure that people didn't feel uncomfortable, making them feel like they had to have sex to go to the event because that's not what we're about. We're just about showing the options as well as making sure they're safe when they decide."
For the events, students will be rewarded prizes such as condoms and lube packets, many from Cirilla's.
"Last year, they gave us toys, both for females and men," she said. "And we get candy bars as well for people who aren't as interested in those kind of things."
Morris encourages people to attend the event.
"It's a really fun way to talk about a kind of serious topic that most people don't really feel comfortable talking about," she said. "It's a way to learn things in a fun environment."
SAT is a service and awareness organization and is hosting the event.
"We are college students, and it's a more talked about subject in college," Morris said. "We want to make sure people are safe."
Events like this are important, especially for college students to be able to talk about these issues, Calhoun said.
"Events like this challenge boundaries about things that need to be talked about," she said. "I hope people challenge themselves by going to a public setting and talking about things they don't normally talk about."
