Ball State finished the first event of its fall season on Sunday with a seventh place finish in the talent-riddled, 11-team field at the Northern Intercollegiate.
The team finished with an overall score of 916 (317-299-300), 64-over-par through 54 holes.
Ball State finished just two strokes out of fifth place behind a tie between No. 19 Virginia and No. 22 Central Florida. The team beat out eighth-place finisher Michigan State and ninth-place finisher Iowa State.
In 10th place was 2010 and 2011 national champion Augusta State.
Indiana won the team event by touting a score of 888 (308-291-289). The Hoosiers had all five of its team players finish in the Top 20 individual scoreboard and its one competing individual finished tied for 13th.
St. Mary's (CA) finished second, Liberty finished third and Purdue finished fourth.
The 75th-ranked player in the country, according to Golfweek.com, Denny McCarthy from Virginia flaunted the top individual score with a 3-over par score of 216 (74-74-68).
Ball State senior Joe Gasser, seeded as the No. 2 golfer on the team, led the Cardinals in scoring with a 222 (79-69-74), placing him in a tie for ninth on the individual leader board, his fourth Top 10 finish in his career.
Junior Tyler Merkel, who was on the All-Mid-American Conference team last season as a sophomore, finished tied for 20th with a 229 (82-74-73).
The three remaining seniors in the Ball State lineup all finished with scores of at least 254. Alex Stinson tied for 25th with a 231 (79-75-77). Brodie Williams finished with a three-round score of 234 (77-81-76), placing in a tie for 31st. The final member of the line-up, Tony Lazzara, scored a 254 (84-83-87).
In their first collegiate event, competing as individuals, freshmen James Blackwell and Tyler Ostrom scored a 245 (85-84-76) and 246 (81-81-84), respectively.
The next event scheduled for the Cardinals is the three-day Golfweek Conference Challenge on Sunday, hosted by Iowa at the Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, Iowa.
