Three thoughts from Ball State vs. Kent State

Kent State's special teams is really, really good

Kent State's kickoff returns is one of the best in the Mid-American Conference and it showed why Saturday. On several occasions, Kent State was one missed tackle away from breaking kickoffs for touchdowns. Running back Dri Archer did just that in the second quarter when he took a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown, untouched. Kent State played the majority of the game with excellent field position and the Golden Flashes really benefited from it.

Keith Wenning can carry a team

In a game where Ball State's run game was limited by Kent State's defense, quarterback Keith Wenning stepped up his game. He threw for over 200 yards in the first half, and finished with 445 yards and five touchdowns in the game, including the winning touchdown to wide receiver Connor Ryan following Brandon Newman's interception.

Ball State defense still needs work

It's no secret by this point in the season that Ball State's defense has its lapses on the field. The Cardinals had several broken tackles that led to big gains for the Golden Flashes throughout the game. The secondary was also burned that led to touchdown passes from Spencer Keith to Dri Archer and Matt Hurdle. But the defense did force a few three-and-outs on Kent State's offense. But if Ball State wants to win the MAC, it will have to get more consistent play from its defense.
