FOOTBALL: Clemson takes early lead, Ball State trails 13-7

Highlight of quarter is Banks 54 yard touchdown run

Score: Clemson 13, Ball State 7

Clemson opened the game from its own 28-yard line to drive right down the field on the Ball State defense. Quarterback Tajh Boyd went 5-for-6 for 50 yards on the opening drive, which was capped off by a four-yard run by running back Andre Ellington.

A positive side for Ball State on the opening possession was Clemson kicker Chandler Catanzaro missed the PAT, to make the lead only 6-0.

The Cardinals couldn't do anything on their first drive of the game. After a three-yard run by running back Jahwan Edwards, quarterback Keith Wenning had a pass blocked and a false start penalty put the offense in a third-and-12 situation. Wenning's pass to wide receiver Willie Snead was a yard short of the first down marker, forcing Ball State to punt.

The Clemson offense wasted no time getting back on the scoreboard, as the team drove 74 yards in just over two minutes to score another touchdown. Ellington's second touchdown game from two-yards out to extend the lead to 13-0 with 6:36 left in the first quarter.

It took three tries for Ball State to get momentum on offense. After starting at its on 8-yard line, Wenning hit Snead over the middle for a 14-yard pick up. Two plays after a pass interference call, running back Horactio Banks took the ball up the middle and out ran the Clemson defense for a 54-yard touchdown to get Ball State on the scoreboard.
