The Ball State Wakeboard Club placed second overall in the Collegiate Wakeboard MidWest Regional this weekend, sending the team to the 2013 national competition in Las Vegas.
Five teams met at the Water Bowl in Muncie for the two-day tournament Saturday and Sunday.
Ball State senior Stephanie Cole said a wakeboarder's challenge is to combine as many tricks into their run as possible. Each trick is worth a certain number of points, on which the boarder is scored within their division.
"Waterskiing, wakeboarding or anything on the lake is my passion especially with my team," a team member and sophomore Zak Sheldon said.
Cole and sophomore Mollie Miller placed first and third in their divisions, respectively. Junior Scott Baker got second in wakeboarding, and senior Tommy Crowe placed third in wakeskating and second in wakeboarding.
The Ball State Water Ski team also competed in the Great Lakes Water Ski Conference in Van Wert, Ohio. Although the team did not qualify for regionals, the team had two personal bests. Junior Sydni Troy landed two 32-foot jumps and senior Jill Young did her personal best in the slalom course.
The teams will continue to practice until the weather becomes too cold and then will begin preparing for nationals this spring. The competition will air in June on CBS Sports.
