After dominating the second quarter, Ball State failed to convert points in the first drive of the second quarter after Steven Schott missed a 47-yard field goal attempt wide left.
Eastern Michigan took over and made quick work to getting on the scoreboard. Alex Gillett hit Bronson Hill for 33-yards to the Ball State 38-yard line. On the play, safety Chris Pauling was flagged for a personal foul for his hit on Hill, which added 15 yards to the play.
Four plays later, Gillett hit Donald Scott for an 8-yard touchdown pass to cut the Ball State lead to 10-7.
The Cardinals next drive stalled as the offense could only get to its own 35-yard line.
With a chance to take the momentum in the game, Ball State linebacker Tony Martin made a crucial stop on a short third down to force a punting situation with just over six and a half minutes left in the first half.
Running back Jahwan Edwards looked impressive on two consecutive runs up the middle, picking up 11 and 14 yards, respectively. On his third carry, he fumbled it and the ball was recovered at the Ball State 37-yard line.
Eastern Michigan converted on its second fourth down conversion of the game inside Ball State territory. The following play, Gillett threw his second touchdown pass of the quarter - a 23-yard pass to wide receiver Garrett Hoskins over Ball State cornerback Jeffery Garrett. Kody Fulkerson missed the PAT attempt wide left, but the Eagles took a 13-10 lead.
Ball State was able to get just inside Eastern Michigan territory on its next possession, but was unable to do anything else as the offense was forced to punt. The punt was fair caught at the Eastern Michigan 15-yard line. After picking up a first down, the Eagles were forced to punt, giving the Cardinals another chance to put up points before halftime.
Quarterback Keith Wenning constructed a drive that got to the Eastern Michigan 12-yard line before Schott came on to make a 30-yard field goal to tie the game at 13-13 before the half.
