UPDATE
In an article by the Star Press, the conversion charge that was filed against Newsome in November also involved backup running back Toney Williams. Williams is a transfer from Tennessee and sat out last season because of NCAA rules.
According to the article, the two football players were charged with trying to shoplift "male enhancement pills" from Muncie's northside Walmart. Newsome and Williams were spotted by an employee at the store who said they put the items in their jacket pockets. They were detained as they tried to leave.
They were then taken to Walmart's asset protection office where the items were recovered.
Both players were not arrested in the incident, but were both charged with a Class A misdemeanor. After both failed to appear at their court hearings, warrants for their arrests were issued, which led to Newsome's arrest Monday morning.
The Star Press also reported that Williams made contact with Muncie's City Court and the warrant for his arrest was withdrawn.
THURSDAY
Ball State junior defensive end Jonathan Newsome has been suspended for the first two games of the season for a violation of team rules, in a news release by the Ball State athletics department.
Newsome was arrested earlier this week and charged with marijuana possession.
According to a Ball State University Police report, Newsome was arrested at about 1:20 a.m. Monday on a preliminary charge of possession of marijuana after a small bag was found in his wallet. The charge is a Class A misdemeanor and carries a maximum one-year jail term.
Newsome was driving his 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee when he was pulled over at Ashland Avenue and Martin Street.
The officer was also made aware of an outstanding warrant on Newsome.
The Star Press reported the outstanding warrant was for failure to appear on a conversion charge that was filed in December.
"We are fully aware of Jonathan Newsome's situation from Sunday night," Ball State coach Pete Lembo. "Based on all the information gathered, we have taken the appropriate disciplinary action based on the findings of the Ball State Office of Student Rights and Community Standards, and in conjunction with our football program's policies."
Newsome transferred from Ohio State last year and sat out the 2011 season because of NCAA rules. He was in position to start at defensive end in the season-opener against Eastern Michigan on Aug. 30. His suspension means he will miss that game and the second game of the season against Clemson on Sept. 8.
