The second half started with an Eastern Michigan touchback and with the new rule, the drive started at the 25-yard line.
A 29-yard run by running back Javonti Greene helped get the Eagles inside Ball State territory quickly. A dropped pass by Tyreese Russell would have gone for a quick touchdown, but instead Eastern Michigan was forced to punt.
On its first drive of the second half, it took only two plays for Ball State to find the end zone. Running back Jahwan Edwards scored his second touchdown of the game, this one a 75-yard run down the left sideline to put Ball State back up 20-13.
The run was the longest in his career, the previous a 28-yard run.
After having the ball spotted at its own 3-yard line, Ball State's Horactio Banks gave his offense some room by getting to the 18-yard line. The team didn't spend much time in its own territory as a pass to tight end Zane Fakes plus a late hit penalty put the ball at the Eastern Michigan 43-yard line.
Three plays later, Wenning found Fakes again over the middle at the Eastern Michigan 13-yard line, which set up an 8-yard touchdown run by Banks to push the lead to 27-13.
Ball State's defense continued to dominate the third quarter, forcing another punting situation for Eastern Michigan. But more importantly, the defense kept quarterback Alex Gillett contained on third downs.
The Cardinals were driving again into Eastern Michigan territory until they faced a 4th-and-1 from the 31-yard line. After getting hit at the line, a second effort by Edwards was enough to pick up the first down and keep the drive alive.
Another pass from Wenning to Fakes put Ball State back in the red zone. Ball State caught a break with a defensive holding penalty in the end zone, which gave the team a new set of downs inside Eastern Michigan's 5-yard line.
The drive was capped off by Edward's third rushing touchdown of the game when he scored from three yards out. The touchdown gave Ball State a 34-13 before the end of the third quarter.
