After scoring a total of five goals in the 2011 season, sophomore Tori Widrick opened the 2012 season with three goals to help give Ball State (1-0) a 4-3 overtime victory in its season opener at Lehigh.
Widrick was part of a group that outshot Lehigh 24-12 throughout the game.
She got the Cardinals started as she scored the game's first goal just a little under five minutes into the game.
Fellow sophomore Jenna Rosenberry recorded the assist on the play.
Widrick scored again off a penalty corner shot at the 18:22 mark in the game, with redshirt freshman Bianca Velez assisting.
Just before the end of the first period, Lehigh got onto the board with a penalty corner goal.
Lehigh also scored two more goals as the second period got underway, one off a penalty corner.
Widrick tied the game with an unassisted goal just a few minutes before the end of regulation, forcing overtime for the young Ball State squad.
After two saves in overtime, Mountain Hawks goalkeeper Sydney Maltinsky-Wilson allowed her fourth goal of the game to give the Cardinals the 4-3 victory.
Freshman goalkeeper Maddi Elliott notched her first victory of her career as she had five saves throughout the game.
Ball State continues its road trip at noon Sunday at Lafayette.
