MEN'S GOLF: Ball State senior wins IGA tournament

Brodie Williams' development with the Ball State men's golf team reached a new height this weekend.

Williams, a senior for the upcoming 2012-13 season, shot an eight-under par 136 on Friday through Saturday to win the Indiana Golf Association Public Links Championship.

The two-round event was held at the Shadowood Golf Course in Seymour, Ind.

Williams edged out competitors Skip Runnels and Jake Groninger by one stroke to claim first place. His first-round score of 66 gave him an early advantage heading into the second round.

"A win would represent more than just myself," Williams told Indianagolf.org after the first round. "It would be a win for my town and for Ball State."

Williams will only have a week to celebrate his win before he moves on to another tournament. After taking second place in the U.S. Public Links Sectional Qualifying in Noblesville, Ind., earlier this summer, Williams is scheduled to play in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championships in Midway, Utah, on July 9-14.

After posting an average of 74.94 in only six tournaments last season, bested only by junior Tyler Merkel's average of 73.47, Williams is in line to play as one of Ball State top golfers next season.
