Pete Lembo has finally taken to Twitter.
The Ball State coach was the latest coach to join the Twitter world last week with the handle @Pete_Lembo and already has more than 300 followers. With some assistant coaches and a large number of the players already on Twitter, it seems fitting for Lembo to join in.
He didn't wake up one morning and decide to get a Twitter account. He said the idea to get one came from students he met with in immersive business classes during Spring Semester.
"There were two different classes, one was an entrepreneur class with seniors and another was a marketing class with sophomores," Lembo said. "The feedback indicated that my willingness to build awareness of the team and make personal contact with them through Twitter would go a long way."
He plans to use Twitter as a way to make the student body at Ball State more aware of the team and make personal connections between them. His first tweet was about offensive guard Kitt O'Brien getting married recently.
"Congratulations to rising senior offensive guard Kitt O'Brien and wife Sarah... recently married. Kitt also squats 600 pounds! Go Cards!" he tweeted.
But Lembo also will use Twitter to keep the student body updated with the team not only on the field, but in the Muncie community.
"If I can tell the student body what kind of practice Keith Wenning had or a great catch Jamill Smith had in practice, or something positive the team did in the community, it helps build relationships with the student body," Lembo said.
Most of his 28 tweets so far have been announcements of a verbal commitment, camps and things that have been going on in the community.
He joked that he's still got some learning to do on Twitter, but it has been a good experience.
"I've still got to learn how to add pictures or articles," Lembo said. "Hopefully by the fall when the students return, I'll be effective."
