Verizon, Comcast to offer bundled services in Muncie

Anyone using services offered by Verizon Wireless or Comcast will now have the option of bundling those services together with the possibility of saving money. The two companies recently announced they would be offering these new options in Muncie, and 11 other Indiana cities.

"We're very excited with this new relationship with Verizon Wireless for sure and I think by Verizon Wireless and Comcast Xfinity offering each others services, it's just a great way to stay connected with video, phone and Internet at home and on the go now," Comcast representative Rob Ponto said. "We're going to team up with Verizon Wireless to offer consumers competitive and compelling offers so they can keep connected while at home or on the go, it's really what we're excited about."

This announcement came about a week before Verizon plans to release the companies new "Share Everything" plan which will allow customers to pay for a certain amount of monthly data that can be spread out across a maximum of 10 devices.

Ponto said the idea is to make connectivity more readily available to current customers and potentially new customers as well.

"Being connected is important and we want to give our customers that feeling that they're always connected to what's important in their lives," he said.

This is not the first time companies like Verizon Wireless and Comcast have teamed up and offered multiple service packages. In 2005, AT&T teamed up with DirecTV to offer the option of bundled packages.

Laura Merritt, Verizon Wireless representative, said these types of services are appealing to college students because of the mobility most students require.

"Looking at the demographic and seeing when you're talking, particularly about college students and young adults, [the idea] is not wanting to necessarily be tied to home to get a multitude of experiences you want to have with your wireless technology," she said. "If you are for example an existing Comcast customer, this could be a great way for you to still enjoy those services while you're on the go."

The development of these new packages were part of a long process Verizon Wireless and Comcast created to make sure these offers were going to benefit the customer.

"It's making sure that what we're putting together is going to make sense for the customer and is going to ultimately bring the most value to the customer," she said. "Of course, it's not something that we would want to just throw out there until we were absolutely sure it was going to meet the customers needs."

Merritt said one of the most exciting parts about the new partnership will be the collaboration to create new technology.

"It wasn't that long ago that text messaging was considered just ground breaking so the ability to do so much more with your device is a natural and logical step in that progression of technology," Merritt said. "Looking at these two companies working together to further develop technology ... is very exciting when you have companies that are very focused on not just the [present] technology but the technology of tomorrow."
