Ball State's No. 1 men's golfer, junior Tyler Merkel, wasn't only competing at the top of his game on the green, he also notched an award for the 2012 Academic All-Mid American Conference.
Merkel's 3.916 grade-point average and All-MAC finish paired with his All-MAC First Team selection for the past season. It was Merkel's first selections
Merkel was selected for the NCAA regionals and led Ball State with a 73.47 stroke average on the year.
Two other Ball State golfers were selected for the All-Mac teams.
Women's golfer Katie Windlan, who graduated in May, was selected with a 3.737 grade-point average, with helped earn her second straight Academic All-MAC selection.
Windlan averaged 80.68 strokes and was the winner of Ball State's 2011-12 Coach's Award.
Senior men's golfer Alex Stinson was the only other Cardinals golfer selected to the Academic All-MAC team after finishing the semester with a 3.698 grade-point average. It also marked the second consecutive year Stinson's was selected.
