FOOTBALL: Ball State accepts two transfer players

Both new Cardinals will be available immediately in 2012

Ball State officially signed two transfer players, Brandon Newman and Jarrett Swaby, on Wednesday through grant-in-aid papers.

Newman is a 6-foot, 303-pound defensive tackle and spent the last four years at Notre Dame. Swaby is a 6-foot-1-inch safety from Central Florida.

In his four seasons with Notre Dame, Newman only appeared in two games - one against Navy in 2011 and the other against Washington State in 2009. He did not record any stats in those games.

Newman was rated a four-star recruit by Rivals.com, coming out of Pleasure Ridge Park High School in Louisville, Ky.

Swaby saw more playing time during his career at Central Florida, including appearances in 11 games in 2011. He redshirted in 2009 and did not see playing time in 2010. He will have two years of eligibility at Ball State.

"We are very pleased to welcome Brandon and Jarrett to the Ball State community and the football program," Ball State coach Pete Lembo said in a news release. "Both of these young men were strong students, good citizens and contributors on the field at their previous institutions. We hope they can both achieve their athletic goals at Ball State while pursuing a master's degree in their chosen fields of study.

"With the arrival of these two veteran players, we anticipate seeing some additional competition for playing time on the defensive side of the ball during preseason camp."

Both players will be eligible for the 2012 season, which starts on Aug. 30 against Eastern Michigan.
