Singer, songwriter, composer and musician are just a few ways to describe the Finnish artist performing on Tuesday night at Be Here Now.
Saara Norris' journey from Berlin to Muncie, Ind., is a part of her U.S. tour, which will last until July 14.
"My booking agent, Christopher, scheduled me to perform at Be Here Now because he has had a good response from Muncie and the venue itself in the past," she said.
Her agent is also the reason why Norris ended up in the United States in the first place.
"He is also the curator of the Nebraska Pop Festival," Norris said. "He invited me to the United States and we decided to create a whole tour around it."
Norris began singing at age 4 and began performing on stage at age 10 as a part of the Children's Choir Opera. After grade school, she went on to study music and sound engineering in college.
Norris described her music as "Finnish indie-pop folk." She can also play a variety of instruments including the guitar, violin, harmonizer and loopstation.
"I'd like to learn how to play the accordion and the electric organ," Norris. "But I am currently learning to play percussion and I think that's good enough for now."
During her 8 p.m. concert at Be Here Now, she will sing songs from her first record "Trippingly off the Tongue," released in 2011, and her newest EP "The Good Life," which has not been released yet.
In her spare time, Norris said she likes to listen to classical music, various soundtracks and pop stars such as Fiona Apple and Regina Spektor.
When she's not in the U.S. "crashing on friends' couches or using couch-surfing to find a place to sleep," Norris lives in Berlin, which she describes as a lot like New York City. But Norris has noticed some differences between the U.S. and Berlin.
"What I enjoy in Germany is that you can find fresh, healthy, ecological food in nearly every supermarket," Norris said. "I try to eat only ecological food, and in the United States, it was sometimes hard to find a store that would match my needs."
However, she still embraces the change.
"In Germany, I'd say people are very accurate and reliable, which I like," she said. "But on the flip side, they tend to be very uptight and negative. I like the American positive way of thinking because I believe in the law of attraction."
In the future, Norris said she plans to spend more time in the studio.
"After 3 years of around-the-year touring, I feel like I have a lot to say." Norris said. "I'd like to record."
