The Ball State softball team split its Friday doubleheader against Kent State and neared the Mid-American Conference single season team record for home runs.
The Cardinals dropped the first game 7-3 but were able to jump out to an early lead and hold on late in the 8-5 win in game two.
Sophomore third baseman and sophomore left fielder Jennifer Gilbert each homered to increase the season total to 57 - two behind Kent State's 2010 record. It was Gilbert's 15th home run of the season which ties her single season record she set last year in her freshman campaign.
Ball State struggled to get out of the fourth inning in the second game after heading into the frame with a 7-1 lead.
Senior pitcher Kim Mazzapica was able to get two outs quickly but wasn't able to get out of the inning without any damage, allowing four runs.
Mazzapica rebounded to finish to improve her MAC-leading pitching record of 20-3. She pitched a complete game allowing seven hits and five earned runs with three strikeouts.
Ball State continues its road trip with a two game series at Buffalo Saturday and Sunday. The first game begins at 2 p.m.
