Overtime in set one is a match away from becoming a regular occurrence between Ball State and Lewis.
Unlike Lewis' 44-42 win in the opening frame over Ball State on Feb. 5, Ball State would come away with the first set in the rematch on Friday, winning 30-28.
But that would be the end of any success for the Cardinals.
They lost the next three games to fall against the Flyers, 3-1 (30-28, 20-25, 20-25, 20-25).
By losing, Ball State fell to 4-6 in the MIVA, pushing them one spot behind IPFW in the conference rankings to 6th place.
Junior outside attacker Larry Wrather and sophomore middle attacker Kevin Owens came away with the best performances on the team.
Wrather was effective in all facets of the game, racking up 10 kills, 10 digs and four blocks. Owens did his part too with 9 kills on 16 attacks to go along with four blocks.
Senior outside attacker Jeff Aucoin played his most extensive time of the season, hitting eight kills on 20 attacks in four sets.
Ball State will travel to IPFW today to play one if its biggest matches of season. First serve is at 7 p.m.
