MEN'S GOLF: Ball State fails to match top teams, finishing in 15th

Lazzara shoots the best score on the team, tying for 38th

Against some of the best competition in the nation, the Ball State men's golf team was handed a humbling experience in the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational. 

Ball State came in 15th out of 17 teams with a final score of 894. No. 3 California claimed the tournament title with an 835.

The two-day weekend tournament had six of nation's top 30 teams competing in it. 

Junior Tony Lazzara, who usually finishes near the back of the lineup, was Ball State's best player in the tournament. He earned an eight-over par 221 to tie for 38th

Sophomore Tyler Merkel finishing one stroke behind Lazzara with a nine-over 222 to tie for 48th. Junior Joe Gasser shot a 12-over 225 to tie for 61st, and senior TJ Carpenter hit a 16-over 229 to tie for 70th

Junior Alex Stinson struggled with the Arizona course, posting a 26-over 239 to finish in 91st, two spots away from the bottom score. 

Ball State will play again next weekend on Saturday on Sunday in the   Kepler Intercollegiate in Coumbus, Ohio.
