Following the Ball State softball team's roughest offensive game of the season, an eight run outburst backed by strong pitching sparked the Cardinals (6-5) to a 1-1 record on Friday at the Citrus Classic in Orlando, Fla.
Senior Aubrey Workman continued the strong pitching Ball State had to start the season. She threw seven strong innings and gave up five hits and three earned runs despite struggling with control. Workman allowed six walks while striking out three in the 3-0 loss to South Alabama (7-5) in Ball State's first game.
An offense led by sophomore Jennifer Gilbert and freshman designated hitter Hanne Stuedemann put up eight runs in only five innings to top Temple (3-4) 8-0. Gilbert finished the game 3-4 with two doubles and three RBIs while Stuedemann added her first career home run and two walks.
Senior Kim Mazzapica kept Temple's offense at bay, throwing a shutout and allowing two hits and a walk while striking out two.
The Cardinals next play St. John's at 4:45 p.m. and Lipscomb at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
