Bus service offers affordable travel to Muncie residents

Students at Ball State now have the opportunity to travel to surrounding cities without the hassle of expensive gas prices.

Lakefront Lines, a bus service that has been operating since 1964, is now offering transportation to any resident living in Muncie to cities such as Ft. Wayne, Ind., Chicago and Columbus, Ohio.

John Goebel, the assistant line run director for Lakefront Lines, said he believes the bus service has seen a good response since it was brought to Muncie in January.

"The college crowd, as a whole, are a decent sized percentage of those that ride our bus system," Goebel said. "But it's for all people in the community to have access to the destinations they need to go to."

The buses used in the service are equipped with restrooms and reclining seats. Wi-Fi will also be added to the buses in the future, and Goebel said he thinks that this will be a smart way to bring in more students to ride the buses.

Joanna Fluhr, a commissioned agent for Greyhound who works at a bus station in Ft. Wayne, said she feels the bus service is making a great contribution to residents in Indiana.

"We're going back into places, especially Lakefront, that have not been serviced in several years," Fluhr said. "It's made a big difference."

This service can also be beneficial to students from other countries who may have not had the opportunity to see cities such as Chicago and Columbus.

"These are places that people can go to and come back on the same day if they want to," Goebel said. "It's been popular for students from foreign places, as far as not having cars available."

Lakefront Lines is also trying to put together a special day where they will sell 50 to 100 tickets for a dollar. Although there is not a date in place, Goebel said they are working hard to find a day that will work well for the service and the campus.

All of the Lakefront Lines travel destinations are available online at lakefrontlines.com.

Customers can buy tickets online or they can pay cash to the bus driver. The ticket prices vary from destination to destination.

"We definitely recommend buying a ticket ahead of time," Goebel said. "It's the easiest way and the schedule is there for you."
