The Ball State women's tennis team had a rough pair of matches this weekend, losing both contests.
On Friday, it was upset by Division III opponent Chicago, 4-3. It didn't get any better for the Cardinals on Saturday, as Ball State lost its first road trip of the season to Indiana in Bloomington, Ind.
The team went a combined 0-6 in doubles over the weekend. Coach Christine Bader said Chicago shell-shocked them in doubles and hurt their confidence for the rest of the match.
On Friday, No. 1 freshman Courtney Wild beat six-time Division III All-American Kendra Higgins of Chicago, 6-3, 6-1.
Senior Kylee Johnson played well after a groin injury limited her early in the season. She beat Kelsey McGillis on Friday 6-2, 6-1.
Johnson's fellow senior, Sarah Hebble, fought Chicago until the last point. Even when the match was already decided, she continued to battle against Linden Li. In the end, Hebble bested Li 4-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Hebble has consistently played well for the Cardinals this season, going a combined 5-1 in singles play. Her only loss came from the Hoosiers.
On Saturday, the Cardinals were surprised and overwhelmed early by Indiana. No one on the Ball State side came within two points of winning a set in singles, and they were swept, 7-0.
In the process, Wild lost her first singles match of the season, falling to Evgeniya Vertesheva 6-1, 6-0.
Although no Ball State player beat Indiana in singles, Johnson came the closest, losing to Shannon Murdy 6-3, 6-2.
The Cardinals' next contest is 6 p.m. on Friday at the Muncie YMCA.
