WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Ball State suffers blowout road loss to Ohio

Cardinals now stand in last place of the MAC West Division

The losses keep piling up for Ball State. After suffering a 24-point loss to Buffalo on Feb. 4, Ball State dropped its second consecutive Mid-American Conference game, a 76-57 defeat at Ohio on Saturday.

For the fifth time this season, Ball State has allowed four or more opposing players to reach double digits in scoring.

Redshirt senior guard Tenishia Benson totaled a team-high 19 points, freshman guard Mariah Byard recorded 12 points, sophomore guard Shavon Robinson finished the game with 11 points and junior forward Porsha Harris chipped in with 10 points for the Bobcats.

The Cardinals got off to a promising start after freshman guard Brittany Carter drained a 3-point field goal just 14 seconds into the game to give the visitors a 3-0 lead. Junior guard Mercedes Miller added a layup to give the Cardinals a five-point advantage, their largest of the afternoon.

But the Bobcats rallied behind Benson, who tallied 11 first-half points to take the lead.

As the game neared intermission, Cardinals' sophomore forward Jazmin Hitchens knotted the game at 22-22 after sinking a 3-point jumper.

But again, the Bobcats' offense took over. The home team went on a 14-to-2 run to end the first half, leading by a score of 36-24.

The Cardinals' offense was better in the final 20 minutes, but the Bobcats proved to be too much for the visiting team from Muncie to handle. The Bobcats outscored the Cardinals 40-33 in the second half to seal the game.

Though the Cardinals shot 40 percent from the field, they were outscored by 12 in the paint and by 17 in points off turnovers.

Ball State has dropped seven of its last eight games and is now in sole possession of last place in the West Division with one more loss than Western Michigan, who is 3-7 in the conference.
