A coffee shop will open in place of the MT Cup in the Village this spring, owner Wally Higgins said.
The coffee shop will be called The Cup, dropping "MT" because it was the former owners' first initials, he said.
The Cup is tentatively scheduled to open mid-March. Higgins and owner Martin George are adding new items to the menu, expanding the vegetarian menu and keeping the same coffee drink and bagels the MT Cup served.
"Hopefully, it will be all the good stuff that was here for 17 years, and we'll kind of improve on that and add our own touches," Higgins said.
Many of the people who were working at MT Cup when it closed will be employed at The Cup, but they will accept applications.
George and Higgins said they also plan to showcase student art, rotating to new students artists monthly, and have outdoor entertainment during the summer.
Higgins said he wants to fill the void in the Village.
"I've been coming here for 15 years, and there's all of these people that I never get to see except for here and I miss them all," he said. "It is one of the few places you can sit and hang out and drink coffee."
