Ball State track and field suffered a close loss tonight at home finishing third, three points behind Western Michigan (167) and Northern Illinois (109). Miami of Ohio finished last in the meet with 82 points.
"We had a number of life time bests and we had a number of season bests tonight," coach Randy Heisler said "We got down to the end of the meet and we didn't have four girls that could run, healthy in the 4 x 400."
Ball State jumped their way to a one two finish in high jump. Haley Austin and Rebecca Lomax finished first and second respectively. Austin marked a jump of 1.70 meters while Lomax marked 1.65 meters.
"Rebecca a week ago we thought had a torn ACL in her knee," Heisler said. "She trained very little in the past two weeks. I'm OK with how she finished. But, I don't want to take anything away from Hayley she is doing really, really well."
Distance proved to be another one two finish for Ball State Friday night. First and second place were both claimed by Cardinals. MaryKate Mellen finished with a time of 5:05.49. Teammate Madeline Goheen finished second five seconds later with a time of 5:10.90.
"MaryKate took the leadership role," Heisler said. "She went out there and just hammered it, good for her."
Courtney Edon took home a first place finish for the Cardinals in the 3,000-meter run. With a time of 10:30 she scored nine points. Allison Blanck scored six points with her third place finish; her time was 10:40.
"They have been a great group of freshman coming in," Heisler said.
Janae Taylor had a strong night with two third place finishes. In the 60-meter dash Taylor finished with a 7.69 time. Taylor also finished with a time of 25.28 in the 200-meter dash, a personal record for her. In both events she scored six points for the Cardinals.
Alyssa Hurlburt finished third in the triple jump with a jump of 10.93 meters.
Next weekend the team heads to the Mid American Conference Championship in Akron, Ohio.
