Presentation on entertainment theory canceled

A presentation on entertainment theory was cancelled Wednesday night due to the speaker's sudden illness.

Media specicalist Jennings Bryant emailed the dean's office of the College of Communication, Information, and Media to alert them that he wouldn't be able to make it.

Lori Byers, associate dean of CCIM, said he reported having a fever and being rushed to a hospital in Charlotte, N.C., where he had been staying.

"I fell ill about 8 p.m. and didn't get a wink of sleep last night," he wrote.

His presentation "Why Did I just Watch That? A Lesson of Entertainment Theory" was part of the David Letterman Distinguished Professional Lecture and Workshop Series. Bryant was going to speak about "the long-term implications of our choices," Byers said in a previous Daily News article.

Byers said she's disappointed about the cancellation because the presentation would have reached students in other departments such as business, English and psychology.

The college won't have to worry about getting reimbursed for the speaker, Byers said. They're only out the cost of advertising.

She said the presentation probably won't be rescheduled since spring is such a busy time for guest speakers. The Department of Journalism, for example, is hosting a speaker on March 14 to celebrate Sunshine Week and the creation of open records laws, and another speaker on March 26.
