Students of the National Residence Hall Honorary are working to make a child's wish come true by raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Members of NRHH say they hope to get every student on campus to donate at least one dollar. If this happens, they will raise approximately $6,000 – enough to allow Make-A-Wish to grant one child's wish.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation is an organization with the goal of bringing hope and joy into the lives of children who have life-threatening medical conditions by granting their wishes, according to the foundation's website.
"We've been working with them [Make-A-Wish] for years trying to grant wishes, and we've always been able to grant one every couple of years. We're trying to bump that up and get more people involved so we can hopefully do one every year," said senior Ashley Biedakiewicz, the vice president of NRHH,
The NRHH recently sent envelopes to the mailboxes of every student living on campus. They asked that students use the envelopes to send in donations for Make-A-Wish through Intercampus Mail.
The envelope method was chosen for its convenience to students. Biedakiewicz said the hope is that students will be more likely to respond if the means to do so are sent directly to them.
"They got it in their mailbox and all they have to do is drop it in the campus mail," Biedakiewicz said of the envelopes, "They didn't have to find an envelope on their own. ... They don't have to worry about a stamp or anything like that."
Unlike temporary fundraisers that busy students rush past, the envelopes allow students to donate whenever they have the chance. The NRHH service chair, junior Ryan Strimple, said there is no approaching deadline for donations and that students can send in envelopes until the end of this semester.
The NRHH will count the donations it receives but will not keep any of the money, according to Strimple. Every single dollar students donate will be given to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
According to Strimple, the group has raised around $1,800 so far this year.
"We've probably raised around $250 just through the envelopes," Strimple said. "So with the $1,800 we're about a third of the way there to our goal."
The NRHH hopes generosity will catch on among students.
"Just tell your friends," Strimple said. "If one person donates and they talk about it to their friends, they're more likely to tell other people to donate."
To give to the fundraiser, put your donation in an envelope, and give it to your residence hall's front desk to be put into Intercampus Mail. The front of the envelope should read:
