MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING: Senior Day comes with tough matchup

Coach admits Ball State will have to be at its best to beat Southern Illinois

The Ball State men's swimming and diving team is competing in its final meet of the season as it celebrates Senior Day against Southern Illinois.

Seniors Tony DeBrota, Andrew Hostetler, Chris Krupa, Gavin McNeeley, Mark Nau and Casey Shroeder are swimming for their final time at Ball State today.

Coach Bob Thomas said it's an important event to recognize the seniors and to send them off the right way.

"They've put in four long, hard years of dedication, commitment and sacrifice," Thomas said. "It's the culmination of all that hard work."

Thomas said he sees success in the futures of these seniors because of their work ethic and accomplishments at the college level.

Krupa said that it has been a long ride in his college career.

"It's kind of surreal," Krupa said. "We've been doing this for so long and it's finally winding down. I'm pretty excited for it."

Thomas said it's going to be difficult to send the seniors out on a win, however, because they are facing a team that he said is in the top three of the Mid-American Conference. He said it would be difficult for the Cardinal's best swimmers to win an event and that the team must focus us on their own progress.

"It's not in the cards to beat them," Thomas said. "It would take us shaving down, resting and swimming at taper speed to beat a team like Southern [Ilinois]."

Thomas said the meet would include some lineup changes so that his swimmers are participating in events that they are planning on competing in at the MAC championships. It will be the last chance for the team to see how it is performing individually against the rest of the conference.

Last week, the Cardinals dropped a close meet to the Miami Redhawks after being tied going into the last event.

The meet will be at 6 p.m. at Lewellen Aquatic Center.
