Man convicted in murder-for-hire seeks new trial

MUNCIE, Ind. — A California man convicted of killing a Muncie man's wife for money in 1993 is seeking a new trial.

The Star Press reported that last week, 60-year-old Jess David Woods filed a petition for post-conviction relief in Delaware Circuit Court. The Whitmore, Calif., man was convicted in April 2009 of murder and conspiracy to commit murder and sentenced to 100 years in prison in the May 1993 slaying of Teresa French.

Authorities said the 29-year-old victim's estranged husband, Anthony, hired Woods.

Woods maintained his defense attorneys provided ineffective assistance. No hearing date has been set for Woods' petition.

The Indiana Court of Appeals upheld Woods' convictions in November 2010. The state Supreme Court declined to hear the case.
