Despite IUPUI's best efforts, the Ball State women's tennis team opened the 2012 season on a high note, posting a 7-0 victory.

Somewhat of a surprise for Ball State faithful was head coach Christine Bader's decision to put freshman Courtney Wild at the No. 1 singles spot.

"Wild had a great fall. She competes really hard, practices really hard and she has a really big heart. I thought she could easily play one for us this season," Bader said.

Her trust was vindicated when she defeated Alisha Cummings, 6-3, 6-2.

"Well, it was my first match, and I was a little bit nervous, but it was kind of an adrenaline rush playing my first match here, [and] my teammates helped me out. We had really good energy today. It was a good match," Wild said.

Wild also came away victorious in doubles as she and her partner, sophomore Kristel Sanders, beat IUPUI 8-3.

Not only did Wild and Sanders win Wednesday evening, but the rest of the Cardinals' doubles squads did as well.

The team of junior Lauren Pickrel and senior Dena Boulieris beat the Cougars 8-0.

Finally, the combo of senior Sarah Hebble and freshman Ashlyn Rang beat IUPUI, 8-7(3).

Rang won in singles as well, fighting her way back from losing the first game to coming away victorious, 5-7, 6-3, 10-1.

Wild came into the match with a blister on her hand, but insisted she'll be fine.

The Cardinals' next challenge is Jan. 26 at the YMCA against Dayton.
