MEN'S TENNIS: Lineup changes prove ineffective as Ball State falls

Illinois pulls off the sweep

Despite a 6-1 road loss to Northwestern last week, several Ball State men's tennis players weren't too discouraged about their level of play going forward.

After its 7-0 road loss to Illinois on Friday, the Ball State men's tennis team may begin to wonder where their level of play is right now.

One area in question is the team's lineup. After playing freshman Patrick Elliott last week strictly at No. 3 doubles, coach Bill Richards decided to replace junior Austin Sansone at No. 6 with Elliott. Richards then moved sophomore Austin Smith, who played strictly at the No.5 singles position at Northwestern, to No.3 doubles with Sansone.

Despite the changes in the lineup, Ball State continued to have its issues with singles and doubles play.

In singles, five of the six matches were decided in straight sets. The lone player who went to a third set tiebreak was junior Alex Brym. Brym, however, failed to win the match for Ball State, losing by a score of 7-6, 5-7, 6-10.

In doubles, Ball State had its only win of the match. Seniors Zane Smith and Derek Carpenter won their No. 2 doubles match 5-2 over Roy Kalmanovich and Stephen Hoh. The other two doubles matches, No.1 and No. 3, were decided by scores of 8-3 and 8-2, respectively.

Ball State will return to action Saturday, Jan. 28 when it plays Valparaiso and IUPUI at home. First serve is 1 p.m. and 6 p.m., respectively.
