MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING: Ball State hosts Miami tonight

Cardinals see advantage in swimming in home pool against tough opponent

Ball State men's swimming and diving team will continue a strong stretch when they face the Miami University Redhawks today.

The Cardinals may have started off the season struggling, but a couple victories and three straight Mid-American Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week awards has the team in good shape as it nears the MAC Championships.

Coach Bob Thomas realizes that Miami is a tough team to beat but sees the return to the home pool as an advantage because he said most teams don't swim well at Ball State.

"The next two meets that we have are against much stronger opponents," Thomas said. "Going up against those teams, even though we do our best, we still are going to fall short. Each guy, in order to get individual success, is going to need to try and beat the times that they posted last weekend."

Junior Michael Weber won his first MAC Swimmer of the Week award after Senior Chris Krupa took home two consecutive awards in the two meets before the Butler Invitational. Weber picked up to victories at the Butler Invitational with a wins in the 100-yard backstroke and 50-yard freestyle.

"It shows the hard work is paying off," Weber said. "I feel like I'm swimming better than I ever have. I feel better than I ever have. I feel stronger than I ever have."

Weber is confident in his abilities and has set lofty goals for the rest of the year including a finish in the top eight in his events at the MAC championship and a plan to break at least one school record.

Thomas said he has never had three straight awards for his swimmers let alone four in one season. It's the individual accolades and performances recently at the Butler Invitational that have Thomas excited for his team.

"We had over 20 season best times," Thomas said. "We had a couple of lifetime best swims. At this point in the season to have those kinds of performances they're starting to show that they're gearing up for the conference championship."
