Ball State student Linsey Hardebeck died Thursday evening after suffering injuries in a car accident along Interstate 69.
Hardebeck, 21, was pronounced dead at IU Health Saxony Hospital in Fishers, Ind. Hardebeck was a full-time student from Frankfort, Ind.
The senior elementary education major worked at the Ball State Child Study Center for the past four years, the Hardebeck family stated through the Goodwin Funeral Home website. She also provided childcare for professors at Ball State.
Authorities believed Hardebeck was on her way back from student teaching on Thursday afternoon when she was involved in the accident.
Madison County Sheriff Ron Richardson said Hardebeck was driving a 1996 Chevrolet Blazer heading northbound on I-69 near the 14-mile marker on the passing lane when her vehicle began to slide at about 3:40 p.m. Thursday.
Hardebeck's vehicle and a pickup truck on the right lane left the roadway to the east side after they began to slide. Richardson said the driver of the pickup truck was not injured. According to The Star Press, investigators said they don't believe the vehicles collided.
Hardebeck was partially ejected from the vehicle when it started to roll down on an embankment. Investigators did not believe Hardebeck was wearing a seat belt.
The student was transported in an ambulance to the hospital. The Pendleton Rescue team was the first to respond to the accident. They requested a medical helicopter, but it could not land near the accident because of the weather.
Services and burial are scheduled for 11 a.m. today in the Goodwin Funeral Home. Burial will be in the New London Cemetery, in Frankfort.
The university released a statement to Hardebeck's family.
"Ball State extends its deepest sympathies to Linsey's family and friends in the wake of this tragic loss. You are in our thoughts and prayers."
