WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Ball State drops three of last four games

Cardinals looking for answers to try to end losing ways

Trying to measure the consistency of Cardinals this season is like trying to forecast the weather. On a daily basis, it's always changing.

There have been times where the sky is full of sunshine and there have times where rain pours down in vast amounts.

Ball State has looked good at certain points of the season, most notably when it pieced together its first three-game winning streak since 2008. The run featured home victories over Murray State and Oakland City and concluded with an impressive, hard-fought road triumph at Evansville on Nov. 29.

Following its remarkable 78-73 double-overtime win over visiting Stetson on Dec. 4, Ball State has been caught in the eye of a large thunderstorm. Having dropped two straight and three of its last four games, Ball State finds itself with a 5-7 overall record.

The latest round of frustrations came at home against Valparaiso on Dec. 18 and on the road at No. 14/19 Wisconsin-Green Bay Tuesday night. The Cardinals clung to a five-point lead at the half against the Crusaders, but regressed mightily in the final 20 minutes of play, scoring just 18 points, which led to a 14-point loss for the home team.

Tuesday night's contest against the Phoenix was over quickly. The Cardinals allowed five players to notch double digits in scoring, while suffering their biggest rout of the season. The Cardinals managed just 12 first-half points against a team that outplayed them in every category. Possibly the most daunting stat was the differential in points in the paint. The Cardinals scored just 14 points in the paint compared to a whopping 50 by their opponent.

The Cardinals have 11 days before they take on Marshall in a 4 p.m. tip-off inside John E. Worthen Arena. A short break for Christmas and a handful of practice sessions could allow the Cardinals to weather the storm that has plagued them of late.
