Police: Ball State worker was 'hoarding' computers

MUNCIE — Ball State University police say a school employee accused of stealing campus computers told police he was "hoarding" the equipment.

The Star Press reports 50-year-old Michael Ray Barton was arrested Monday on five preliminary counts of theft. The Yorktown man remained jailed Wednesday at the Delaware County Jail on $25,000 bond.

Barton is a member of Ball State's environmental control staff. A probable cause affidavit says security footage allegedly shows Barton taking a computer hard drive from a locked room from a school building.

When officers later searched Barton's home they allegedly found more university-owned computer equipment that had been reported stolen.

A police report says Barton insisted he was not planning to sell the property, "but rather was 'hoarding it' in case he would ever need it."
