Jahwan Edward's 11th touchdown run of the year put Ball State on the scoreboard in the second quarter against Toledo, but the Cardinals trail 21-7 going into halftime.
Edwards barreled through the Rockets' defensive line for a one-yard touchdown five minutes into the second quarter, cutting Toledo's lead in half.
Toledo extended its lead back to 14 points with a 30-yard pass from Terrance Owens to wide receiver Bernard Reedy with 52 seconds left in the half. It was Owens' second touchdown pass of the day.
Edwards' touchdown moved him into a tie for seventh on Ball State's single-season rushing touchdown list with Art Yaroch and Michael Blair. MiQuale Lewis holds the record with 22.
Following Edwards' touchdown, Ball State attempted an onside kick, hoping to catch Toledo off guard. The Rockets recovered, but kicker Scott Secor appeared to injure his right knee on the play. He had to be helped off the field by Ball State's trainers.
Though Toledo is halfway to the 42 points it averages this season, the Cardinals have done a better job than most schools in the first half against the Rockets. The last time Toledo scored as few as 21 points in the first half was in a 28-21 victory at Bowling Green on Oct. 15. The Rockets were shutout in the first half that day.
Quarterback Keith Wenning has completed 10 of 15 passes for 82 yards. Edwards has 43 rushing yards.
