WOMEN'S TENNIS: Three Cardinals claim weekend titles

Johnson, Hebble, Wild win singles brackets in Ball State Invitational

In the fall, the Ball State women's tennis team plays in separate tournaments to prepare for the opponents it will see in the spring. If the Cardinals play as well in the spring as they did last weekend at the Ball State Invitational, it will be a long season for its opponents.

The Cardinals finished the invitational a combined 26-12 over both Friday and Saturday.

"I thought we had a great weekend," coach Christine Bader said. "We had gorgeous weather, and got to showcase our great facility. The girls really represented Ball State well."

Three Ball State players won the championship against Eastern Kentucky University in their respective brackets: seniors Kylee Johnson, Sarah Hebble and freshman Courtney Wild.

Johnson won a close match against Eastern Kentucky's Soioa Oscoz, 7-5, 6-4.

Hebble beat Eastern Kentucky's Carmen Rodriguez 6-3, 6-2.

Wild lost two doubles matches with partner sophomore Kristel Sanders, but rebounded to down Eastern Kentucky's Jessica Albuquerque in singles 6-4, 6-3.

"In college tennis, if you have a bad doubles match, you've got to come out and play singles right after, so I think the girls are used to it," Bader said. "They're learning to take things one match at a time and learning from it."

Ball State's next challenge is at the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals in Memphis on Friday.
