Coach Steve Shondell said he stressed to his team this week they couldn't overlook any match, no matter who the opponent is.
The Cardinals followed his instructions to perfection in its first match this weekend in the Purdue Active Ankle Challenge.
Ball State defeated Western Carolina Friday afternoon 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-15) in a beatdown that lasted less than 75 minutes.
The win extends Ball State's streak of perfection in 2011 to an 8-0 mark. That total exceeds Ball State's start in 2010, when it was undefeated at 7-0 before falling to Wright State.
The Cardinals also won their 32nd match under coach Steve Shondell, matching their win total under former coach Dave Boos, who coached from 2007-2009.
Boos needed 94 matches to reach 32 wins. Shondell needed only 37.
Ball State will return to court in Mackey Arena Saturday at noon against Jacksonville State, followed by a match against 13th ranked Purdue at 7:30.
