After finishing its 2010-2011 season as the Mid-American Conference Champion, the Ball State men's tennis team began its 2011-2012 season Friday at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic with the intention of keeping its momentum.
At the beginning of Friday's session however, the Cardinals found themselves in an early hole.
Sophomore Austin Smith was the lone Cardinal to begin play in the 9 a.m. session, losing to Wisconsin's Jack Larsen 6-1, 6-1.
In the 11 a.m. session, Ball State continued its early struggles in doubles competition. Junior Dalton Albertin paired up with freshman Ray Leonard, losing by a close 9-8 margin to Wisconsin's Alexander Kostanov and Billy Bertha.
The other doubles teams, senior Zane Smith, junior Alexandre Brym, senior Derek Carpenter and junior Austin Sansone also lost to Wisconsin in their respective matches.
During the final session of the day, Ball State picked up much needed momentum, winning five of its nine singles matches against host Marquette. Smith, Carpenter, Leonard, freshman Patrick Elliott and junior Alex Doherty all won their matches in straight sets.
Ball State will resume play at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic Saturday when they face Northwestern at 1 p.m. and Marquette at 3 p.m.
