The American Cancer Society kicks off Breast Cancer Awareness month Saturday with their second annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.
The event is 9 a.m. to noon at the cancer center in IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital located on West University Avenue.
Walkers will travel down McKinley Avenue and Gilbert Street.
Registration for the event is free and can be done online or the day of the event at 9 a.m.
Though it costs nothing to join the walk, The American Cancer Society will be accepting donations for Breast Cancer.
Kristen Jackson, community representative with the American Cancer Society, said the organization's goal is to raise $30,000.
Jackson said there will be a concert from 9 to 10 a.m. and different activities for cancer survivors throughout the day. There will also be a variety of booths to raise awareness.
Jackson said Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the only fundraiser in which all the money goes towards breast cancer awareness.
"It's been a national movement since 1993 with the American Cancer Society," she said.
The event started in urban metro areas such as Indianapolis and Detroit and just grew over the years, she said.
The success of the walk allowed the American Cancer Society to branch out to smaller communities such as Muncie.
Jackson said those who are not interested in walking could still contribute by cheering on the walkers.
"When you see the community come together from both Muncie and Ball State and the excitement they share in finding a cure for breast cancer, it's amazing," she said.
Jackson said early detection and prevention are two major themes at this year's event. Getting a yearly mammogram is one example, she said.
