FOOTBALL: Ball State trails early in home opener

Buffalo took an early lead in Ball State's home opener, scoring on the game's opening possession. The Bulls lead 7-0 after the first quarter.

Buffalo drove 60 yards to open the game, relying mostly on quarterback Chazz Anderson. But the Bulls scored on a 27-yard touchdown pass from wide receiver Terrell Jackson to wide receiver Marcus Rivers. Jackson, who was a quarterback in high school, took a handoff on the play before finding Rivers in the end zone.

Ball State had a chance to score on its opening drive after a roughing the quarterback penalty extended its possession. But Steven Schott's 43-yard field goal attempt bounced off the left upright. It was the second time Schott has missed a field goal in his career, the first coming in 2009.

The first quarter came to a close with a Ball State first down inside the red zone.
