After a slow start to the game, Ball State scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 21-7 lead against Buffalo into halftime of the home opener.
The Cardinals struck quickly in the second quarter when running back Jahwan Edwards scampered round the right end for a seven-yard touchdown.
The Cardinals took the lead with less than five minutes to play in the half on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Keith Wenning to Briggs Orsbon. The pass completed an eight-play, 82-yard drive that included 40 receiving yards for Orsbon.
In the final minute of the half, Edwards found the end zone again. The freshman bowled his way through the middle of the line for a four-yard touchdown that was upheld after an official review. Edwards has scored a touchdown in back-to-back games after finding the end zone last week at South Florida.
Saturday marked the second time in three games this season Ball State has turned a seven-point deficit after the first quarter into a lead, the other coming on Opening Night against Indiana.
Edwards already has 77 rushing yards, seven yards shy of his career high of 84 yards set against Indiana. Wenning has completed 12 of 17 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown.
Buffalo's offense has been led by wide receiver Marcus Rivers with five catches for 65 yards and a touchdown.
