FIELD HOCKEY: Cards still looking for first victory

Miami presents next chance for Ball State to end its winless record

Currently winless in 2011, Ball State coach Beth Maddox and her team are looking to get the first victory of the season over Mid-American Conference opponent Miami.

The game, which starts at 3 p.m. today, will be the first MAC contest of the season for both teams, and Maddox believes her group will get a victory against the RedHawks.

"The vibe at practice this week has been good," Maddox said. "The girls are focused [for this game]. It's important for us to stay focused and continue to improve."

The Cardinals (0-6) are coming off a brutal non-conference schedule, including their most recent road trip versus a pair of nationally ranked teams in Boston and Michigan.

A fast start and consistent pressure on offense will be the keys for the Cardinals to get a win.

"I'm expecting to get on the scoreboard first," Maddox said. "We want to attack them and create opportunities in the circle."

The Cardinals will rely on senior forward Devanny Kuhn and freshman midfielder Sanne Hermans. Both have the highest production on offense this season.

Kuhn has recorded a team-high 27 total shots, 18 of which have been on goal, while Hermans leads the Cardinals in assists with two and points with four.

Miami (2-6) is coming off a 3-0 win over UC Davis on Sunday and is looking to beat Ball State for its second consecutive win. Junior midfielder Olivia Miller leads the RedHawks with five goals, 11 points and 10 shots on goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Mueller is allowing under two goals per game and has compiled two shutouts for the RedHawks despite her 2-5 mark in goal this season.

Last season, the RedHawks tied for second in the MAC with an overall record of 8-2. Having lost both contests to Miami last season, Maddox considers the RedHawks to be a dangerous team.

"Miami is a good team and they play hard," Maddox said. "We will have to be ready to fight and fight together. They tend to be a very physical team. They are skilled and always come ready to play. [It] will be a battle."
