A fire alarm that sounded in the Art and Journalism Building around 5:45 p.m. went off when smoke from a ceramics kiln hit the detector.
University Police officer Scott Stafford said this happens about twice a year.
"It's better to be safe than sorry," he said. "We just let it burn."
The woman who set it off is a graduate student studying metals. She said she was using the indoor kiln in a way that it isn't normally used, and she didn't expect to trip the fire alarm.
The alarm was silenced within minutes and people were allowed back into the building.
